San Diego, CA: The Fish Market (downstairs)

We ended up at The Fish Market for dinner. The Fish Market was rated Best Seafood by the Reader's Poll of San Diego in 2006, and is right on the water and next door to the retired USS Midway. The Fish Market was also voted most affordable in the same reader's poll.

The menu (printed new daily) is extensive - fish, sushi, shellfish, pastas, crab, lobster - and affordable for all budgets. From Clam Chowder for $5.50 to the smoked fish sampler for $16.95 to Wild Pacific Red Albacore for $69.75 there is something for everyone. The kitchen is open to the dining room and one whole wall is made of cold storage - large fridges holding many kinds of very fresh seafood.

My Grilled Washington Steelhead Salmon with Mango salsa was extremely fresh and perfectly cooked. The Jasmine rice and Basil cherry tomatoes were just as fresh and very tasty as well. Literature girl really liked her Sashimi, and the Science Guy's swordfish looked great.

The atmosphere was casual and quite loud. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Big windows looked out over the water and a oyster bar sat right inside the front door. The stairs to the second floor led to the Top of the Fish Market - where the prices were more than double and the dress code much more stringent than our jeans and t-shirts.

I will certainly eat here again - if I get the chance. It's not everyday you get to choose between fresh Hawaiian Tombo and local White Seabass. What a delightful problem to have - what to eat???

Outstanding!
