Ah, the ocean! Any time you visit Cannon Beach, you have to stop at Doogers. Doogers is your basic family seafood restaurant with a range of pasta, steak and seafood dishes. With a restaurant on the first floor and bar on the second, it generally serves as the hotel restaurant for the Hallmark Resort across the street (your bill can be charged to your room). Seating is family style, service is prompt and polite, and the establishment is clean and somewhat contemporary, decorated in a nautical style.
The Petrale Sole was good – very rich – and served in a dish of butter. It was perfectly cooked but not seasoned well. It really needed a more balanced taste and the couple of fresh lemon slices I squeezed over it basically fixed it. The toast on the side was good – and promptly commandeered by Yati’s Bird Boy who, (what else?) illegally fed it to seagulls off the hotel room balcony the next morning. Price was affordable ($6 - $9 for breakfast and $12 - $18 for most dinner plates) but you could certainly spend more ($35 for a Surf and Turf plate). The wine list was decent by not inspired, and there was a child’s menu with many choices – including odd ones for kids (squid and rib eye??).
Breakfast the next day – oatmeal and a side of fresh fruit – was fresh and tasty. With lots of windows, you can sit and watch people walk by – although you won’t be able to see the beach unless you take your oatmeal across the street to the lookout in front of the hotel. This is a good place for decent seafood and a relaxed environment. And, if you want to take some of the beach home with you, Doogers will even send you a Clam Chowder Kit – shipped straight to you by UPS – so you can re-create the dish at home. Call: (503) 436-2225.
Rating: Solid, dependable, but uninspired. Good.
